Why Ayurveda?
“Most ancient, proven form or holistic and personalized medicine”
Vedas (derived from “vid” – to know) means eternal knowledge, wisdom. Vedas are authoritative and infallible. Classified into 4 main Vedas, namely RigVeda, YajurVeda, Samaveda Veda and Atharva Veda they encompass every aspect related to and relevant to human lives. It is “authoritative” because it is a comprehensive system providing a clear definition in every and interrelated field of science, medicine, engineering, astronomy, astrology, mathematics and how it impacts human lives. It is infallible because, it is “apauruseya” means it is not authored by a human being; it is composed of words (shabda) which in turn is composed of phonemes which are eternal. Ayurveda (science of life, derived from the words “ayus” (life) and “veda” (knowledge or science), is a rich heritage. Considered as part of Atharva Veda, comprises of hundreds of thousands of “riks’ and ‘shlokas” referred to by Charaka, Susruta, Vaghbata and a host of medical writers. This science of knowledge is passed on through generations for many centuries, through neatly organized Prasnas and Sutras supported by Bhashyas (explanations or commentaries) from experts who practiced this form of medicine, not only to “cure” ailments but also to promote “wellness”.
Ayurveda covers a considerable area of therapeutics, materia medica, surgery, physiology and anatomy. Central to Ayurveda is the Tridosha (“Vata, Pitta, Kapha”) theory which states that human body is formed by these three vital energies which in turn is created from the 5 primordial elements of nature namely space, air, fire, water and earth. When the dynamic state of health is disturbed due to subtle or gross aggravation of tridoshas, the body-mind connection begins to suffer and disease process begins. When the aggravation or derangement happens, Agni (fire) in our body is affected resulting in production of “Ama” (toxins). Retention of these toxins in our body (blood) slowly affects Prana (vital life energy), Ojas (Immunity) and Tejas (metabolic energy at the cellular level). Our body is naturally designed to respond to this imbalance by getting rid of this harmful manifestation and bringing everything back to normal balance. Ayurvedic treatment is all about supporting the body, which refers to complete holistic system of life comprising of body, senses, mind, soul and all the energies, in its effort to restore balance back to normal. This treatment principle involves preparatory steps like “Snehana” (directing all the toxins to the gastro intestinal tract through oil massage) and Svedana (liquefying these toxins through herbal formulations) for subsequent extractions , also called as “Shodana” (cleansing). Panchakarma , is about five cleansing methods to get rid of the toxins in the body to heal. Ayurveda is also considered one of the oldest form of “personalized medicine” where one or a combination of these panchakarma methods is administered to an individual depending on his/her constitution (prakruti) and disorder (vikruti)
